PHILLIP RYAN

Phillip has over 20 years of experience defending clients in criminal proceedings. He has practised as the principal of a criminal defence firm for the last 15 years.
Phillip previously worked as a solicitor advocate at the Aboriginal Legal Service for over six years and gained further experience at Saunders & Co (London) for two years. He has been accredited by the Law Society of NSW as a specialist in criminal law and has extensive experience appearing in a range of criminal matters in different jurisdictions. Throughout his career, he has defended clients in matters ranging from minor traffic offences to complex murder trials. He is experienced in appellate matters before the Criminal Court of Appeal, Supreme Court bail applications, and has appeared on several occasions in Coronial Court matters.
Growing up in regional New South Wales, Phillip developed a strong sense of justice, applying this to his criminal defence career in metropolitan courts across Sydney. He is highly regarded among his peers as an approachable, knowledgeable, and persuasive advocate for his clients. JAMES PAYTEN
— Principal Solicitor
James is an Accredited Specialist in Criminal Law and has been a principal of the firm since 2017. Before founding the firm, James worked as a solicitor advocate in the Northern Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency, the Aboriginal Legal Service in Redfern, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and King & Wood Mallesons. With experience in both defence and prosecutorial advocacy, James is able to strategically respond to the prosecution case and prepare a formidable defence for his clients.
James’ dedication, impressive knowledge of the law, and commitment to defending the rights of his clients has earned him a reputation as a distinguished member of the legal profession. He is known for his tireless work ethic, which consistently produces the best outcomes for his clients.
Aside from appearing as an advocate in complex criminal matters both in New South Wales and interstate, James has lectured at the Australian National University, written for various publications, and represented clients in Royal Commissions. HAYLEY LE
— Principal Solicitor
Hayley is a principal solicitor of the firm and has worked exclusively as a criminal defence advocate throughout her career. With over eight years of experience at the Legal Aid Commission, Hayley is well regarded by members of the profession because of her unwavering commitment to advocating for the rights of vulnerable and disadvantaged communities throughout the State.
Hayley worked as a senior solicitor in regional and metropolitan courts in a wide range of matters, including specialist work in complex litigation defending continuing detention and extended supervision orders in the NSW Supreme Court. Having practised interstate as a solicitor advocate at the Northern Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency, Hayley has experience appearing in serious matters in the Local Court and trials in the NT Supreme Court. Hayley brings to the firm her diverse knowledge from her time at the NSW Police Ombudsman, 7 Bedford Row Chambers (London), National Children’s Youth Legal Centre, and LawAccess.
